Keeping Green always in style....
For a long time I have been intrigued about the blanked off hole next to the docking port on my MP2x00. It seemed an odd thing for apple to do, build a potential port then blank it off when the final production models were made. Thnakfully years later some very interesting modifications came ous for the blanke space. The first i remember seeing was a headphone jack, a nice mod but not that useful for me. Then the 'Dongel Destroyer' came along, finally an intergrated serial port. Since then their has even been a USB port but as I am still a lover of old technology I tracked down a SER-001 mod and this is how I installed it.
The first step was trying to actually track down the SER-001. They have long been out of manufacture and when they were is was an Newton fan that had created the it then had a small number mass produced. Thankfully a user of NewtonTalk message list helped me out.
The next step was to make sure I had backed up my MP2x00 and removed the battery, PCMCIA cards and the pen. As you can see from the picture my trusty MP2x00's door has seen better days, I did not break it doing this modification.
Now at this point I have to say that if your going to try this yourself do so at your own risk. I am doing this tutorial for entertainment purposes only.
As you can see from the picture I removed the screws highlighted in red.
Once I prised the back of the newton off I had to be careful not to loose the Infrared cover and another part near the pen inner holder.
As you can see from the picture I have also removed the blanking plate form the port where the SER-001 is doing to be installed.
When the board was first available I think it was advertised a 'plug and play'. Thanks to PDA-Soft we now know that some case modification is needed.
This tab needs removing from the back panel of the rear case (the part I removed the screws from).
The second of the case modifications I needed to take the craft knife to was on the main case.
The ridge here was clearly intended for an Apple manufactured part to fit in, but clearly that part was never manufactured or released.
